Why the rempah stays
When sisters hear "keto", many picture a sad plate of boiled chicken. That is not keto, and it is certainly not our food. Rempah is used in small amounts, carries almost no carbohydrate, and gives every plate its soul.
The genetics did not change. The kitchen did. Coming back to the rempah is coming home.
The four I cook with every day
Kunyit (turmeric)
The gold in our gulai and lemak. Kunyit contains curcumin, a compound studied for its anti-inflammatory properties. It works best the way our grandmothers used it: cooked into real food, with fat like santan alongside it.
Serai (lemongrass)
The fragrance that makes a pot smell like home. Serai brings brightness without a grain of sugar, so a dish tastes lively and complete on its own.
Halia (ginger)
Warmth and depth in soups, sup and gulai. Halia has been used for digestion for generations, and it gives a broth body without any thickener.
Cili padi
The heat that makes a plate satisfying. Cili padi contains capsaicin, and a spicy plate tends to be eaten more slowly, which helps you notice when you are full.
Spices are not a replacement for changing the plate, and no single spice heals on its own. What they do is make real food delicious enough that you never miss the rice. Flavour is what keeps a sister going in week three, when willpower alone would not.
The sugar spoon you do not need
Many Malay recipes add a spoon of sugar "to balance" the rempah. It is a habit, not a necessity. Balance instead with:
- Asam or limau for brightness.
- Salt, added at the end and tasted as you go.
- Bawang cooked slowly until it turns golden and naturally sweet.
Your family will not notice the sugar is gone. Your body will.
Store-bought paste: read the label
Ready-made rempah and sambal pastes save time, but many contain added sugar, starch or flour. Turn the packet over and read the ingredients line before it goes into your pot. If sugar is in the first few ingredients, put it back.

Three things you can do tonight, for free
You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.
1. Leave the sugar out of tonight's sambal or gulai.
Balance it with asam, limau or salt instead.
Why: that one spoon of sugar is often the only sugar in the whole dish. Remove it and the plate becomes keto without changing the recipe you love.
2. Read one paste label.
Pick up the rempah or sambal paste you use most and read the ingredients.
Why: hidden sugar and starch in pastes undo a careful plate without you knowing.
3. Cook one dish with fresh serai and kunyit.
Bruise a stalk of serai and add a thumb of kunyit to tonight's lauk.
Why: fresh rempah makes the plate taste so complete that you stop reaching for rice to fill the gap.
May Allah make it easy for you, Amin.

Questions sisters ask me
Are rempah and spices keto?
Yes. Kunyit, serai, halia, lengkuas, bawang, cili and daun limau are used in small amounts and carry almost no carbohydrate. They give a keto plate its flavour without adding sugar.
Is turmeric good for you?
Turmeric, or kunyit, contains curcumin, a compound studied for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is part of a healthy plate, not a cure on its own, and it works best inside real food like gulai and lemak.
Can I use santan on keto?
Yes. Santan is a healthy fat that carries the flavour of the rempah and keeps you full. The problem on a Malay plate was never the santan, it was the rice beside it.
Do I need sugar to balance rempah?
No. Many recipes add sugar out of habit. Balance your rempah with asam, limau, salt and the natural sweetness of slow-cooked bawang instead.
Are ready-made rempah pastes keto?
Read the label. Many store-bought pastes contain added sugar, starch or flour. Making your own, or checking the ingredients line, keeps the plate keto.
The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
