The swaps she made
White rice out, brown rice in. Brown rice out, sweet potato in. Then Japanese sweet potato in the air fryer, every lunch, because it is sedap and it feels healthy.
Now she is asking whether boiled or baked is better, because the reading on her meter has not moved. Same reading. Same review date.
She kept swapping one starch for another. Her sugar got one every time.
The wrong story
- "Sweet potato is a healthy carb."
- "Baked is better than boiled."
- "Japanese sweet potato is different."
Sweet potato is a good, honest food, with more fibre and vitamins than white rice. But it is mostly starch, and starch is broken down into sugar in your blood. Boiled or baked, Japanese or local ubi keledek, it is still a starch.
Boiled vs baked vs air-fried
How you cook a starch changes how fast it reaches your blood.
- Boiled sweet potato tends to raise blood sugar more slowly.
- Baked, roasted and air-fried sweet potato tends to raise it faster, because dry heat breaks the starch down further and makes it easier to digest.
So the air-fried one, the one she loved most, often lifts her sugar more than the boiled one. But notice what both answers have in common: both still lift it. The question was never how you cook it.
Starch is long chains of glucose. Your body cuts those chains apart and the glucose goes into your blood, calling for insulin. Cooking method changes how fast the chains are cut, not whether they are. For a body that is already insulin resistant, the total amount still matters.
The swap that actually works
The real swap is not one starch for another. It is the starch base itself.
Keep your lauk, your sambal, your santan. Put them on konjac rice or cauliflower rice instead. Both are good. The fullness comes from the protein and fat in your lauk, not from the base under it. If you want the full comparison, my konjac vs cauliflower rice article walks through it.
This is food and mechanism, not medical advice, and I am a keto coach, not your doctor. If you take medication for diabetes, cutting starch can lower your blood sugar faster than you expect, so speak to your doctor first. And never stop or change your medication on your own.
Three things you can do tonight, for free
You do not need to buy anything from me to start. These are yours, tonight.
1. Change the base, not the name.
Tonight, put your lauk on cauliflower rice, konjac rice, or simply more sayur, instead of rice or sweet potato.
Why: the base is where most of the sugar on a Malay plate comes from. Change the base and the whole plate changes.
2. Let the lauk be the meal.
Take a bigger portion of protein and sayur so you are full without the starch.
Why: protein and fat keep you full for hours without asking much of your insulin, so you stop needing the starch to feel satisfied.
3. Walk ten minutes after dinner.
Around the block, or the long way to the lift.
Why: working muscles pull sugar out of your blood on their own, so a short walk helps your body clear whatever starch was on the plate.
May Allah make it easy for you, Amin.
If you want someone to cook it for you
You already know another starch was never the answer. Changing the base, every single day, is the work.

Questions sisters ask me
Is sweet potato keto?
No. Sweet potato is mostly starch, and starch is broken down into sugar in your body. It has more fibre and nutrients than white rice, but it still lifts blood sugar and does not fit a keto plate.
Is boiled sweet potato better than baked?
Boiled sweet potato generally raises blood sugar more slowly than baked, roasted or air-fried sweet potato, because dry heat breaks the starch down further. But boiled still raises it. The better question is whether you need the starch at all.
Is Japanese sweet potato healthier for diabetes?
Japanese sweet potato is a lovely food, but it is still a starchy root. For a body that already struggles with sugar, it behaves much like other sweet potatoes and potatoes.
What can I eat instead of sweet potato on keto?
Konjac rice, cauliflower rice, and more low-carb vegetables like cabbage, kangkung, long beans and broccoli. Let your protein and santan-based lauk be what fills you.
Is sweet potato better than white rice?
It has more fibre and vitamins, so it is not a bad food. But for blood sugar, swapping rice for sweet potato is swapping one starch for another. Most sisters see the real change when the starch base is replaced, not renamed.
The plate is the effort. Allah is the Shafi. Biiznillah.
