What keto actually is

Keto is not a brand, a product, or a Western fashion. It is a metabolic state.

When you eat very few carbohydrates, your body runs out of easy sugar to burn. So it does what it was designed to do and switches to burning fat instead. That state is called ketosis, and in it your insulin stays low.

Low insulin is the whole point. Insulin is the storage hormone. While it is high, your body is locked in storage mode. Bring it down and the body can finally open the fat stores and use them.

Most sisters think their problem is willpower. It is not. It is chemistry, and chemistry is reversible, biiznillah.

The halal question, answered properly

Sisters ask me this before anything else, so let me be plain.

Keto is halal. It does not require pork. It does not require alcohol. It does not require any product at all. It requires meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and fat, which is exactly what our kitchens have always held.

What you do have to watch is where you buy. Some Western keto products contain gelatin from non halal sources, or alcohol based flavourings. So read labels, or do what I do and simply cook from whole ingredients your nenek would recognise.

The halal keto shopping list

Protein

Ayam, daging, kambing, ikan, udang, sotong, telur. All of it. Fattier cuts are better, not worse.

Fat

Santan, coconut oil, ghee, butter, olive oil, avocado. This is the fuel. Do not fear it.

Vegetables

Kangkung, bayam, sawi, cabbage, long beans, brinjal, cauliflower, cucumber, lady's finger. Anything green and leafy, plus anything that grows above ground.

Rice replacements

Cauliflower rice and konjac rice. This is the swap that makes the whole thing survivable in a Malay household.

Aromatics, and they matter more than you think

Kunyit, serai, halia, bawang, cili, belacan, daun kesum, daun jeruk. Free flavour, zero carbs, and turmeric and lemongrass have been used in our kitchens as medicine for centuries.

One cup of cooked white rice is roughly 45g of carbohydrate. Your body converts that to glucose, and the equivalent lands in your blood like about ten teaspoons of sugar. Not because rice is sweet. Because of what your body turns it into.

Now think about eating that three times a day, for twenty years. That is the story of type 2 diabetes in our community, and nobody ever drew you the picture.

Surviving the hawker centre

You do not have to hide at home. You just need three words: tak nak nasi.

Your first week, honestly

I will not sell you an easy week, because that would be a lie and you have been lied to enough.

Days two to four are usually the hardest. You may get a headache. You may feel tired and flat. This is not failure and it is not your body rejecting the food. It is your body switching fuel, and it is mostly water and salt leaving you.

Drink more water than feels normal. Salt your food properly. That is most of the fix.

And by the end of week one, most sisters tell me the same thing, almost word for word: the afternoon crash is gone, and I am not hungry all the time any more. That is not motivation. That is insulin coming down.
